What events should I enter?

Initially this might depend on which part of the country you live in, but most speed event competitors tend to start with sprinting simply because there are more venues and more events than there are in hillclimbing. After all, there are not too many hillclimbs in, say, East Anglia!

There are numerous motor clubs and regional associations that organize sprints, hillclimbs and indeed speed championships that cater for both disciplines, many with a countrywide selection of venues. Most cater for the whole spectrum of vehicle types mentioned in our ‘What car do I use?’ section, including ‘one-make’ series. For those inclined to chase championships, most of them require only a selection of events to be included as counting rounds, so travel costs can be minimized. Bear in mind, though, that for the really serious speed event contenders, travel costs (and accommodation costs unless, like an increasing number of competitors, you have a motorhome and trailer) form a not inconsiderable proportion of the annual budget. For example, at the sharp end of the sport, the 34-round, 17-event British Hillclimb Championship travels as far afield as Scotland, Jersey and Northern Ireland!

The regional championships, which require only a National B licence to participate in (some rounds are run concurrently with National A events via a dual permit system), involve rather less travelling and it’s quite possible to have a competitive and enjoyable season without straying too far from your own doorstep. One of the most wide-ranging and comprehensive speed series is the Toyo Tires Midland Speed Championship, whose 24-round 2007 calendar includes eight hillclimbs and 16 sprints, while the Hillclimb and Sprint Association’s Aldon Automotive Speed Championship includes 10 hillclimbs in its 19-round calendar. So there’s plenty to choose from and wherever you live, and whatever you drive, there’s bound to be something to suit your car and your pocket.
